Recipient Org: Description Founded in 1874, the Belfast Philharmonic Society’s mission is to perform choral work to the highest possible standard engaging the greatest number of people possible through its concert and training programmes and contributing to the musical and cultural life of the city of Belfast and Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The aims of the organisation are to advance arts and culture by promotion, practice and performance of choral works; to foster and develop the knowledge of the public by providing public performances of the best works in music; to encourage composers, instrumentalists and singers of merit by introducing their works and talent to the public. The primary means by which the organisation does this are through its weekly choir rehearsals and seasons of choral performance. There is an adult choir of approximately 130 singers, and four youth choirs (Phil Kids, Youth Choir, Youth Ensemble, and Chamber Choir) of approximately 250 children and young people in total. The youth choirs programme provides weekly choir rehearsals alongside musicianship classes and vocal training, designed to be appropriate to the age and development of the singer and employing the principles of Zoltán Kodály. All levels of the choir are conducted and accompanied by professional musicians and supported by volunteers to ensure young members are appropriately safeguarded. The Youth Choirs regularly perform alongside professional organisations and other young singers - there is a long-term relationship with Northern Ireland Opera, and a collaboration with Dublin Youth Choir as the Cross Border Youth Choir.
