Recipient Org: Description East Belfast Community Counselling Centre is a Charity which was established to fulfil a need in the local community, to provide a vitally needed counselling service for adults. As an organisation we believe everyone should have access to high quality counselling irrespective of their ability to pay. Individuals can contact us directly or be referred by their GP, or relevant Health Professional. We use a range of therapeutic approaches and have adapted our delivery model for counselling using telephone, email, text and video conferencing to continue to work with our clients over this period of locking down and social distancing, and have managed to move the vast majority of our clients to these delivery methods over the past three week with the system working well, and receiving positive feedback. East Belfast Community Counselling relies on the support and expertise of a small number of employees (3 full-time and 4 part-time), sessional counsellors and volunteers. All accredited or in the process of accreditation with the BACP. In 2019, we had an average of 35 sessional counsellors providing services at any one time. The organisation is currently delivering a number of successful projects including: • Health Hub Counselling - Belfast Health Trust Primary Care Mental Health Hub - this funding is to provide services to the community through GP referral. • SHIP counselling - The Public Health Agency – funding for the new Self Harm Intervention Programme (SHIP programme) in partnership with the West Belfast Wellbeing Alliance • VSS Victims and Survivors project - Project funding from the Northern Ireland Assembly ‘The Executive Office’, under the Victims and Survivors Service which funds a Trauma Counsellor, and a Health and Wellbeing caseworker focusing on the supporting those members of the community who have been specifically impacted by the troubles. • The Open Door Project – Funded by the Belfast Regeneration Office this project delivers services to young people and parents with children under 18. As an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) we work within their Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, and are subject to the Professional Conduct Procedure. Our aim of providing high quality and appropriate counselling services, we believe aligns with the aims of this funding scheme. We will directly support those individuals who have been struggling with mental health issues, and now find themselves with the additional stress and anxiety of the Covid 19 lockdown and social distancing measures. Our waiting lists continued to grow and we see an increasing demand for counselling services outside the constraints of our current funding streams. Already vulnerable people experiencing poor mental health, now face either self-isolation due to symptoms of Covid 19, or because they are already being advised to shield themselves because of additional health issues, this combination can cause and increase in the severity of their mental health issues.
