Recipient Org: Description Waterside Women's Centre was set up in 1994. The centre is located in an area of high social and economic disadvantage. We provide community based education and support for women to give them the confidence, skills and qualifications needed to achieve their full potential. We provide on-site childcare focused on the needs of the child. This enables women to participate in the programmes we offer. Overall we support women to pursue their own development and make decisions about their own lives. We empower women by providing education, training and information and place the issue of gender equality on the agenda. These priorities have been selected to counteract the dis-empowerment and social exclusion faced by these women. We can offer them skills, training and educational opportunities in a relaxed and non threatening environment where they can feel comfortable and at ease and which in turn helps to reduce the isolation and vulnerability facing many women living in the local area. We deliver up to 25 classes per week covering 20 subject areas including accredited and non accredited learning, physical and mental health programmes, mum and baby support programmes and older peoples support programmes. Classes take place morning and afternoon to take account of women's family commitments. We link with other local community and voluntary and statutory organisations. We work in partnership with 13 Women's Centres regionally to encourage collaborative and strategic work. We focus on key areas such as lobbying to influence policy. Partnership working enables us to identify the needs and gaps in relation to community based education and childcare services. We offer our facilities to other community organisations who are working with marginalised groups, women and young girls requiring specialised support and advice through meetings, counselling and training sessions. We are user led and consult with local women on a regular basis through questionnaires, focus groups and 1 to 1 discussions and plan our programmes in response to local need. We are proactive at identifying changes in the environment and use information from local and regional reports and policies to ensure we understand the issues affecting women and deliver support programmes to meet their needs. We learn from previous work and look for new and innovative ways to respond to the needs of the community. Approximately 200 women and children use the facilities on a weekly basis.
