Recipient Org: Description Newington Day Centre is a voluntary organisation. We are regulated by The Regulation Quality Inspection Authority and all Care Staff are registered with The Northern Ireland social Care Council. Newington Day Centre has been providing care to people who are older and at times quite vulnerable for over 40 years. Newington Day Centre represents all that is good about Community Care. It is a unique Community Day Centre which strives to include, respect and value older people, especially frailer, older people. We currently care for 35 members per day with a range of complex needs. We provide 15 other places for members who are at risk of becoming socially isolated or clinical deterioration. The commitment of the staff and volunteers working in the Centre is central to their belief that they can help to make life a little better, more fun and more interesting for those in their care. This common purpose has led to the development of a wide range of services and a diverse range of activities. Over the last number of years we have also provided services within the community to strive towards an interactive age aware and age friendly community. Newington Day Centre has three strands to its service. We provide a range of services to our members who are supported by our volunteers and together we provide support and respite to our carers. It is difficult to separate the three as they go hand in hand to provide a user led inclusive community approach to care of older people. This Community Day Centre values the experience, knowledge, skills and commitment offered by older people and in fact almost half of the ten members of The Management Committee are over the age of sixty. Newington Day Centre has a Service Level Agreement with The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. However, to provide a community Day Centre with a homely atmosphere and effective quality care, it is important we access funds from elsewhere. We raise funds of half as much again, as our Core Funding, to provide the highest level of care which is synonymous with the reputation of Newington Day Centre. Some of our more vulnerable members may require assistance with personal hygiene, hairdressing, and therapeutic hand care and chiropody service. It is also extremely important to provide a nutritious meal and catering for special dietary requirements i.e. diabetics, coeliac, vegetarian and occasionally pureed meals. Whilst practical care is important for the physical care of our members a range of activities and social events is equally as important for good mental wellbeing and stimulation. Activities, outings and social inclusion can help promote a positive approach to older age. We aim to help people who are older to remain active, independent and living in their own home. We aim to achieve this by increasing self-esteem, encouraging members to make decisions affecting themselves and giving a platform, through consultation and focus groups, to express their wishes. The Management and staff aim to provide our members with the best quality of care possible, thus improving their overall quality of life. We want our members to enjoy their time at the Centre. There is an inclusive pro-active approach to what our members can achieve. We focus on the positive aspects of older age whilst supporting care needs. This positive approach can help members feel good about themselves and often relieves the stress of caring at home. The Centre also provides a service to some older people who need support, be it emotional, through bereavement, sudden illness or the need for companionship. With every service our member requires we aim to assist them with the highest degree of dignity, empathy and care that we can give. The aim of the Centre is to help our members, where possible, to remain living in their own homes. We try to help them remain independent and continue to increase their self-esteem, all core values to the ethos of Newington Day Centre. Over the last number of years through our Reaching Out Connecting older people project, we have developed outreach services to older people in our community and not alone the members attending the centre, These community events have proven to be invaluable in identifying isolated older people and addressing loneliness. These services have continued over the past year even though the project funded by the Lottery had finished. These activities, events, and community support will be a vital resource following the current pandemic. Newington Day Centre staff quickly adopted to a new way of working and are up for the challenges that lie ahead. We pride ourselves in offering a warm friendly welcome at the Centre for members from all walks of life, all religions and ethnic backgrounds and all abilities
