Recipient Organisation

Nearly two million people live in slums in South Africa and the numbers have been increasing. Slum dwellers, squatters and poor people are faced with landlessness, evictions, lack of decent housing and inadequate access to basic services. Hostels built during apartheid remain untransformed, with single rooms being occupied by whole families. The project will help three peoples’ movements to engage affected residents to participate in urban planning processes, city and provincial authorities in improving the situation. The project is aimed at making the movements strong, effective and inclusive, resulting in better housing and basic service provision, such as water and electricity.
