Daisy's Dream East Cheshire: Supporting Children Through Bereavement and Serious Illness (360G-CheshireCF-A521378)

£7,955
Recipient Organisation

Daisy's Dream support children and young people who have experienced a death or life limiting illness in the family - enabling them to move forwards in a positive way. The project aims to establish a service in East Cheshire that will ensure children and young people impacted by a bereavement or serious illness are able to get the support they need so that they are not defined by that experience. A grant will enable the service to be extended to respond to demand over 12 months, building on work undertaken to date by a locally-based Therapeutic Practitioner. A grant will go towards staff and office costs and resources.

Recipient Org: Description Daisy's Dream (registered charity since 1998, transferred to CIO in 2018) believes that no child's future should be defined by a death of life limiting illness with the family. Given time we believe that children and young people can learn to cope with the changing dynamics of their life and ultimately move forwards in a positive way. Daisy's Dream has a team of highly experienced Therapeutic Practitioners (all with a background in education, counselling and/or social work) who are available to respond to enquiries, requests for information and support over the telephone or via e-mail. Enquiries are most commonly received from parents, grandparents and teachers. For some this can be enough, but for many this progresses or requires more intensive and sustained support with the Therapeutic Practitioner meeting with the family and child to discuss what is going on in their world and how it is impacting the child. With the child's permission this then results in the Therapeutic Practitioner and child meeting regularly (at home or school), providing the child the opportunity to talk without fear of upsetting those around them. These meetings can continue to many weeks or months with the Therapeutic Practitioner maintaining contact with the family, supporting them in their support of the child, and also the school, often running training sessions for teachers and, if appropriate, talking to the class or school (this is especially pertinent in instances where someone in the school has died or been diagnosed with a serious illness). Children and young people that are supported bu Daisy's Dream are also able to attend group events where they can meet others with similar experiences. These group events are reflective but also an opportunity for the children to have fun and see that it is OK for them to smile and laugh again.
