Music Therapy for Palliative Care Patients (360G-CheshireCF-A566617)

£5,000
Recipient Organization

In April 2019, funding was secured for Rowcroft Hospice Music Therapist, David Holmes, to offer music therapy for 1 day per week for 12 months at Torbay Hospital, as part of an attachment to the hospital Palliative Care Team (PCT). The current funding concluded at the end of March 2020 and so we are seeking your support to be able to continue. The primary aim is to reach people who are struggling to cope with the changes and emotions as the end of their life approaches. People often discover the opportunity to connect with their own creativity in the form of song writing, instrument learning, singing and playful exploration of a new medium.

Recipient Org: Description For the last 38 years, Rowcroft Hospice has helped thousands of local people with life-limiting conditions, as well as their families and carers. We are the only organisation in South Devon offering specialist 24-hour adult care for patients living with life-limiting illnesses, delivering this care at home, in our 12-bed inpatient unit and in other community settings within our 300 square-mile catchment area. Our care is designed to allow patients to reach the end of their lives in comfort and with dignity and is personalised to their needs. We also offer a vast range of complementary therapies, music therapy and a programme of ‘Precious Moments’, where we create memories which loved ones can cherish for years to come. Education is also one of our key objectives as we try to reduce inequalities in care and raise the standard of support throughout the professional healthcare community. The care we provide has been rated as ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission from their most recent inspection in 2016. Services are provided free of charge, and we are reliant on the generosity of individuals, trusts and companies to help raise the c.£9m that is required each year and only receive 26% of these costs from the NHS. In 2016 the hospice was threatened with possible closure when it faced a £1m funding shortfall. It was an uncertain time, but thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to restructure our services and rebuild our income, whilst still supporting those who needed us most. Our hospice is currently facing new challenges and our 5-year strategic plan, which began in 2018, outlines how we will overcome these and develop our services to provide patients with the care and support they need, in the place of their choice, both now and for the future. We currently support 1 in 3 of all adult deaths resulting from a life limiting illness within South Devon. By 2023 we aim to care for 1 out of every 2, increasing to 2 out of 3 by 2030. All of our services are being developed to ensure we are able to meet these challenges, but this proposal will look specifically at our Hospice at Home service and the changes needed to meet this growth in demand.
