Telephone befriending (360G-CheshireCF-A570518)

Leap has provided a successful volunteer led befriending service since 2001, a 1:1 service and a group befriending which are currently delivered within 18 communities across South Lanarkshire and which is underpinned by Quality in Befriending Excellence accreditation. With the onset of the COVID - 19 Pandemic the service had to be reviewed because of social distancing and therefore moved to a telephone befriending, however, Leap hopes to resume to offering face to face befriending and socially distant group befriending, but would also like to continue with the telephone befriending service which has attracted a significant number of new clients. The project will allow Leap to recruit a Volunteer Development Officer with the role of recruiting volunteers to deliver telephone befriending of providing support and supervision and for matching of clients with volunteers.

Recipient Org: Description LEAP has a proven track record spanning over 27 years of delivering services for local people aimed at active inclusion, improving and/or maintaining health and wellbeing, addressing issues around loneliness and isolation, rurality and access to services. Lightburn Elderly Association Project (LEAP) was established by a group of older people from the local community back in 1992, who identified a lack of educational, social and health activities for older people. LEAP has a proven track record of over 26 years of delivering quality services and opportunities for older people in South Lanarkshire. The organisation has developed significantly in recent years, and we have seen a vast expansion in our service delivery across South Lanarkshire. We currently offer three discrete projects, co-designed by older people across South Lanarkshire: Hands on Project – Currently going through an expansion into rural South Lanarkshire, HOP is a volunteer led service offering long and short term Befriending to elderly and socially isolated clients within their own homes, supporting them back into community life. In addition we offer a free Handyperson services to assist with small jobs around the home which aims to reduce the risk of slips and falls, and retain independence. R:evolve Recycle – This unique intergenerational project was developed and led by older people and aims to bring back a ‘make-do-and-mend culture’ by offering services and practical learning opportunities delivered by older volunteers. We currently operate three high street Swap Shop Boutiques as well as a schools education programme and clothing bank. LEAP Leisure and Learning – Now operating for over 27 years, this project has expanded across the urban areas of South Lanarkshire offering older people co-designed learning and leisure opportunities for older people. We run around 25 distinct learning activities per week, and currently have a waiting list for some of these. We offer learner led opportunities such as IT, which focuses on digital inclusion and introduces topics such as using the internet and shopping online; Spanish;arts and crafts; badminton; tai chi and a fortnightly walking group. A true measure of our success has been our volunteer commitment and our communities continued involvement and participation, which has enabled us to make a difference in the lives of older people within South Lanarkshire. We have had significant success in enthusing local people to become active and loyal volunteers to assist in the delivery of our services. This success has enabled us to not only sustain existing services but to expand across both urban and rural areas of South Lanarkshire. Our work has been recognised locally and nationally through various prestigious awards including Quality in Befriending Excellence, Investing in Volunteers, European Foundation of Quality Management, Revolve Quality Standards and the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, the Herald Society's Older People's Charity of the year 2019, as well as being championed by members of the local community and local government.
