The Marvellous Family Support Service (360G-CheshireCF-A572924)

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity provides specialist nurses and support for seriously ill children across the UK. Many families caring for a seriously ill child often are not able to access the financial support and benefits they are entitled to. These funds are vital in helping them overcome the unique life challenges that come with having a child with a complex, incurable, lifelong illness. With Assura’s support, we can establish the Marvellous Family Support Service which will help families to access their benefits entitlement, overcoming these financial worries and help to relieve the associated stress and anxiety caused.

Recipient Org: Description Roald Dahl saw the inner strength and bravery in every child, especially those who were seriously ill. He believed in their importance and in helping them overcome life’s toughest challenges. And, while the heroes and heroines of his books may appear small and powerless, they still manage to triumph against all odds. Inspired by this vision, Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity was founded to change these seriously ill children’s worlds for the better. Having a serious illness takes a massive toll on a child and their family. The all-consuming anxiety, financial worries, isolation, strain on relationships, parents juggling the needs of siblings, destruction of children’s self-esteem and bullying from others who do not understand them. Over the last 30 years we have strived to create better lives for these children and families. To do this we provide specialist nurses at hospitals and in the community across the UK who give clinical, holistic and psychological support to children with complex care needs, as well as their families. We concentrate on basing our specialist children’s nurses in areas of deprivation or where there is a need to specialise in underfunded health conditions. We know there are over 100,000 seriously ill children and young people in the UK and currently our 78 Roald Dahl Nurses care for around 21,000 of them. At the heart of everything we do are the children and our drive to ensure every seriously ill child in the UK has a Roald Dahl Nurse. The strategic aim of our charity is to improve the healthcare outcomes and resilience of seriously ill children and young people living with complex, lifelong, underfunded conditions, and their families. Long-term Outcomes: • Improved quality of care for seriously ill children living with complex, lifelong, underfunded conditions • Improved experience of care for seriously ill children living with complex, lifelong, underfunded conditions • Improved resilience of seriously ill children living with complex, lifelong, underfunded conditions, and their families • Improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness when caring for seriously ill children living with complex, lifelong, underfunded conditions To achieve this, we have put in place a long-term plan, which over the next four years will increase the impact and reach of our Roald Dahl Specialist Nurses by: • Creating further Roald Dahl Specialist Nurse posts within the NHS • Developing, promoting and supporting children’s specialist nurse leaders and role models • Championing specialist nurse-led innovation in children’s healthcare • Providing additional support to seriously ill children and families.
