Support for Cheshire (360G-CheshireCF-A595026)

£2,000
Recipient Organization

Steps will use the £2,000 to ensure that we continue to provide our essential helpline and family support services to the families in Cheshire. Telemedicine is now widely used, and while it has great benefits, parents often say they need another source of information and Steps fill the gaps. In this project we aim to provide the personal support of a volunteer to ensure the parent/patient feels informed and supported, in the absence of face to face appointments we can compliment telemedicine. The funding will allow us to recruit and train new volunteers from the region and to provide volunteers access to online training courses. The funding will allow us to continue to provide a wide range of online resources including videos, films and webinars, and, it allows parents to connect with a volunteer who has experience of the condition. The positive impact of this project is that families, parents and individuals will have information that is not available elsewhere. Our resources will alleviate the stress and isolation that parents experience when children are facing surgery, amputation and years of complex treatment.

Recipient Org: Description Steps was set up as a charity 40 years ago with the aim of supporting families, children and individuals who have a lower limb condition that affects their walking and their physical health and well being. Around 2,500 children are born yearly with leg, hip, ankle and foot conditions conditions that vary in complexity, symptons and prognosis. Without the correct diagnosis, treatment and support it would be impossible for these children to walk properly later in their lives. Our services aim; 1. to ensure that those affected by childhood leg conditions are informed and supported, from the initial diagnosis through to treatment. 2. To make sure that there is widespread understanding of childhood leg conditions and of the challenges facing those affected by them; 3. To ensure that every effort is made to improve treatment and support for childhood leg conditions. We do this by: *Recruiting volunteers, parents who have experience of the conditions, such as caring for a child needing surgery, amputation or has mobility issues. * Linking volunteers to the local hospitals in Warrington, Macclesfield, Leighton and Chester. * Providing practical and emotional support through our Steps Helpline and digital presence; * Ensuring that families are as fully informed as possible about the realities, challenges and options that lie ahead. Our aim is to provide a range of support services that help families and individuals who have the conditions, giving information, guidance and emotional support. Our belief is that all children born with a lower limb condition should have the best possible chance to thrive and achieve their potential. We work with the NHS, to encourage best practice and also raise awareness of the issues concerning patients and their families. Striving for a better future we engage with research projects, to increase understanding of, and improve treatment for, all aspects of childhood lower limb conditions. We offer a safe place to share concerns and to benefit from the experience of others, through our Family Contact Service and online community which is provided by volunteers. This includes closed facebook groups, one for parents of children with conditions and one for adults. The core services are our family contact service and helpline. Helpline and family support volunteers support parents who receive a diagnosis at their 20 week scan. The volunteer, as a parent with relevant experience is matched with a parent new to the condition. Volunteers provide the support and the reassurance, along side the health professionals. However, volunteers are there for parents in the months after when the parents are at home coping with aftercare, mobility and prosthetics. Normally we support parents at family support and information days but these are currently not happening due to Covid. We provide support on the helpline, via email and host online parent's forums. We have a medical committee who help us provide answers for complex cases. Volunteers organise online support sessions for parents to help them cope through the difficult times and to reduce isolation.
