"Music for Hope and Recovery" (360G-CheshireCF-A607434)

£5,000

The Spitz Charitable Trust supports the mental health and well-being of vulnerable and disabled care home residents through the therapeutic power of live music. Our project will bring weekly interactive live music sessions to BSL, during the Winter of 2021. This grant would be put towards funding the organisation, coordination, and implementation of 10 visits to the care home. Each session makes a significant difference; the biggest being enhancing their well-being and quality of life by addressing their emotional needs, building their self-esteem and sense of belonging, improving community connections, and lessening isolation.

Recipient Org: Description Since 2014, The Spitz have been enhancing the mental health and quality of life of isolated and disabled adults. We do this through the power of live music. Our work is extensively with care home residents living with complex, long-term disabilities; including dementia and brain injuries. We support their well-being by reducing isolation, promoting creativity, and improving community connections. This provides them with a vital lifeline to the outside world and gives them the opportunity to learn new skills. We currently have a long-term residency at Bridgeside Lodge (hereafter BSL), where we have built relationships, know individuals’ needs, and work closely with the care staff. Led by professional and sensitive musicians, our work is inclusive, accessible and interactive: “The Spitz are amazing for our morale...for staff the music is a boost, for residents the sessions are empowering and give their lives meaning.“ - Fatma Makalo, General Manager at Bridgeside Lodge "I can't tell you how grateful I am. You've really made my day." - Resident Gerard B, BSL Covid-19 meant we had to adapt. However, over the last 18 months we have successfully helped the 64 elders and 80 day-staff at BSL get through the crisis. We have been delivering often twice-weekly, socially distanced, small group concerts and song-writing workshops in the care home garden. Since November, we have been working inside the home (subject to Covid tests), carrying out 1:1 sessions with residents in the comfort of their rooms.
