Recreational Art as Art Therapy (360G-CheshireCF-A608827)

The Bridge Homelessness To Hope support homeless and vulnerably housed guests, as well as the lonely, vulnerable and isolated, by providing them with a safe space to come, meet and get support, with the aim to get everyone reintegrated into mainstream society. We're running a series of recreational arts as art therapy groups - Monday - art - can be structured, with support, or people can just come and doodle, Tuesday - skills day, includes CV writing, ESOL , interview techniques and courses such as food hygiene. Wednesday the building is used by City of Sanctuary who work with asylum seekers. Thursday - cookery, Friday - music. We're looking to raise funds to start new courses that our guests have asked for - photography, music and 'cooking on a budget'. The grant will be used towards the cost of materials for the projects and towards the costs of providing sessional workers to support the groups. The recreational activities we provide including music, art and a cooking offer a safe space for our guests to learn new skills, build their confidence and express their thoughts and feelings through a range of therapeutic practices.

Recipient Org: Description The Bridge Homelessness to Hope is based in an area of Leicester that suffers from the highest levels of poverty and our guests are among the most marginalised people in the city. Those that visit us often have other complex issues in addition to, or as a direct result, of being homeless. Some will also have been excluded from mainstream services and others won’t access them as they feel stigmatised and many face multiple disadvantages; experiencing several overlapping problems at the same time as homelessness such as mental ill-health, drug and alcohol addiction, offending and family breakdown. They tend to fall through the cracks of society because no one takes overall responsibility for helping them break the cycle. Some, even if they don’t have a diagnosed condition, still experience psychological trauma in their day-to-day lives due to the impact of homelessness. Here at The Bridge, we believe in long-lasting change, where the people we work with are treated as individuals with specific needs and not just a problem to be passed through another system. With our support and access to a range of therapeutic and empowering services our guests are able to meet their own needs and have hope for a better future. The main aspiration of people who are homeless is to have a home of their own; that provides safety, stability and peace. Our caseworkers work on a one-to-one basis with our guests to help them achieve this. But, we understand that housing someone isn’t the end goal and living in accommodation after being homeless for a long time doesn’t automatically solve a person's problems, and in some cases may even cause difficulties that weren't previously there. That’s why our door remains open after guests are housed and why we continue to support them for as long as is needed, enabling them to make long-lasting positive changes to their lives. The Hope Centre provides a safe space for people to meet basic needs such as washing and drying clothes, showering, accessing WIFI and eating a hot meal. Our caseworkers are also on hand to advise guests on housing, benefit and EU Settlement Scheme applications, and can reconnect them with a GP or Dentist as well as refer them to mental health and well-being support. All of the services we provide at The Bridge are individually created and designed to be non-judgmental, strength-based and empowering. Being homeless is a dark and lonely place to be and at times, make them feel hopeless and lost in the world. Our vision is for everyone to have a place they can call home and have hope for the future. Through our therapeutic, trauma-led services and guest-volunteer opportunities we aim to empower our guests to a place where they’re able to meet their own needs, feel hopeful for their future and inspired to enjoy healthy, fulfilling lives. It’s our aspiration that they then go on to help others and be proof that it’s possible to live a beautiful, fulfilled life after homelessness.
