Archaeology on Prescription (360G-CheshireCF-A608845)

£5,000

Using York Archaeological Trust's extensive public engagement experience we want the people living and working in York to enjoy the benefits of our archaeological work and the stories we uncover., therefore we have designed an innovative programme with partners across the city of Archaeology on Prescription, to engage with individuals who want to find another way of trying to improve their health and wellbeing. We want to create a 6-month pilot excavation project (ahead of an annual roiling programme) to enable us to develop, trial and evaluate our ideas, working, in the first instance, in partnership with non-statutory organisations. Grant funding will pay towards the team to deliver the project on the ground, including a trained support worker, over the duration of the pilot project. Specifically, we want to create a new way of using the practice of archaeology for people whose mental wellbeing could benefit from taking part in outdoor activity, being part of a team, learning something new and finding a positive connection with the place where they live.

Recipient Org: Description York Archaeological Trust (YAT) was founded in 1972, as an independent charity, in response to the increased threat presented to York’s archaeological remains by modern development at the time. In terms of activity, it undertakes (at our offices in York, Sheffield, Nottingham & Glasgow): • a full range of professional services in an archaeological market; • archaeological conservation; • community archaeology; • archaeological research and publication; • advocacy on the importance of archaeology and heritage to society; • archaeological training; • the operation of five visitor attractions in York (JORVIK Viking Centre, Barley Hall, DIG, Richard III Experience and Henry VII Experience); • the organisation of festivals and events; • a virtual programme of public engagement, and • the provision of a touring exhibitions service. The majority of our public engagement work is focused on York through our attractions and events as well as community engagement work; whether that is providing access to excavations or engagement with young people at school, learning at home or in other settings or audience development work in York through our co-created ‘Your DIG’ projects. Our focus on this ‘community’ work is essential to deliver our aims and vision: • To enable and undertake research and ensure public impact. • To change the strategic model of archaeological practice. • To sustain and develop participation for everyone. • To educate and empower people. • To act as advocates for the importance of heritage. YAT is, therefore, a unique organisation; we have the resources and experience to, not only, deliver professional archaeological services and heritage attractions, but, through our stated vision to ‘Build Better Lives through Heritage’, we are committed to creating meaningful impact through our work within the communities in which we live and work. Archaeology is about unearthing stories about individuals, society or culture, and our main objective is to bring those personal lost stories alive and ensure that people today can play a part in what we do.
