| Recipient Org: Description | The Welcome is an anchor community hub and cafe based within the Knutsford communities of Longridge and Shaw Heath. It serves a highly deprived area of social housing estates and we provide a range of essential services that support the most vulnerable people in this community. We are the first port of call when anyone in this locality needs help or advice. Since the Covid-19 restrictions lifted in early 2022, The Welcome has been focused on developing services to address the cost of living crisis, rebuilding community spirit, and mental health & wellbeing. Our mission is now defined as serving this community through the provision of high quality advice and support services with an emphasis on 5 broad service areas: ADVICE/ SIGNPOSTING/ ADVOCACY: The success of The Welcome is built around our cafe -the 'hook' to draw people in for social, and community activities. We listen to people’s needs, hold their hands during a crisis, assist with accessing welfare benefits, and signpost beneficiaries to Citizen’s Advice Bureau, housing officers, healthcare providers, social services, Job Centre Plus and other professionals that we either work in partnership with or commission. We support people at every stage to ensure we achieve positive outcomes. COMMUNITY: Community events for fun and to boost community spirit, festivals, celebrations, trips, and youth sports at the local sports centre to promote physical activity. Having a vibrant cafe with friendly staff and volunteers to welcome people in has been instrumental in alleviating fears as we emerged from the restrictions of the pandemic. TACKLING POVERTY: We provide nutritious home-cooked meals at free/ subsidised rates to bring people in through the door. Other anti-poverty measures include the foodbank/ nappies/ uniforms/ clothes donations managed by Hope Central, plus festive food parcels at Christmas and Easter, holiday hunger free meals for young children, debt & budgeting advice, and fuel vouchers via The Cheshire Lions Club. EMPLOYMENT/ TRAINING/ VOLUNTEERING: Skills development, coaching/ mentoring, employment training/ support, job search and support to ensure people remain in employment. Volunteering opportunities are created for work experience. We are piloting a new income generation scheme ‘Meals on Wheels’ for people reliant on social care which has created 15 volunteer positions and 3 part-time employment contracts. WELLBEING/ MENTAL HEALTH: Social/ community groups and talking therapy group activities to reduce isolation & loneliness and improve mood. Children and family activities to build relationships/ save money. We hold funding for free counselling sessions which bridge the gap between GP referral and NHS waiting times. Group sessions include: Older people lunch club, coffee mornings, chair exercise, tai chi. As we enter year two of the three year CCF grant, we want to continue delivering the services that have been established in the past year, extend our reach into Cheshire East with a view to creating more partnership working and streamlining referral systems with social care partners. Within the broad service areas named above -the success of The Welcome comes from developing pathways for progression of all beneficiaries. The Welcome is all about helping vulnerable people to transition from where they are (whatever their starting point) to achieving their own highest potential: We are creating opportunities and progression routes by supporting anyone (irrespective of their need) through their whole journey to wellbeing and independence. We will help them address issues, empower them with relevant skills and then help them to progress to volunteering, training or employment as the final exit points. eg -Dave (name changed) presented with a rent arrears letter because all his bill were rising -we did the initial assesment and referral to the housing officer, Citizen's Advice Bureau and foodbank. But we also referred him to the job club and by attending weekly for a number of weeks, he was able to rewrite his CV, do some online training and we helped him to secure a higher paying job. |
