Recipient Org: Description We are a community co-operative trust, an exempt charity led by a forum including parents, alumni, housing co-ops, educationalists and the wider community supporting 300 children with SEND and their families, focussed on those attending Brent Knoll & Watergate Schools. Our base is Bellingham, one of the tenth most deprived wards in the UK. Because children with SEND tend to be marginalised we are trying to build a community around them ? we have got tired of waiting for society to accommodate our children. On our Board are three parents who have had children with SEND (one child has died; unfortunately, many of our intake have life-limiting conditions). 27 of our children are wheelchair users, so we have had to raise funds for specialist mobility devices and trikes as well as for eyegaze machines so that non-verbal children can express themselves practically and creatively. In the pandemic a grant from L&Q housing enabled us to send an eyegaze machine home and it dramatically improved the home situation of a single parent family. We deliver holiday clubs at Watergate and Brent Knoll Schools. The majority of our children have autism and it is hard for them to find play settings elsewhere. Phoenix Housing is on our Board and their tenants have on a number of occasions generously provided grants for the 2 week summer holiday club. One long term aim is to create appropriate housing so school leavers can live more independent lives and also access employment. During the pandemic a team of volunteers worked from April to August with FareShare delivering food parcels to hungry families. We are regulated by the Department for Education and share co-operative values and aspire for the highest standards of education. BBC?s Newsnight featured one of our schools, Watergate https://twitter.com/i/status/1357447451100270596 and we were Lewisham Mayor's Award winners in 2020 for our COVID response. Our flagship Makaton Choir showcases our children's talents.
