Recipient Org: Description At The Akshaya Patra Foundation, our mission is to provide hot, nutritious food to children at school; encouraging them into education and giving them and their families the best possible chance of escaping the cycle of poverty. In India, over 45 million children do not go to school because they have to support themselves and their families through work or begging. Our meals give the poorest families an incentive to send their children to school and keep them there. We only work in government or government-aided schools, ensuring that we reach the most disadvantaged children. Since our inception in 2000, we have grown from feeding 1,500 children in Bangalore, to feeding 1.76 million children across 12 states in India. For one in four of our beneficiaries, this is their only meal of the day. Our meals have far reaching benefits; breaking down class and caste divides amongst children when they share a meal, employing local women to prepare food and supporting local economies through sourcing produce from local markets and suppliers. We have won prestigious awards including the Microsoft Education Award for our innovative use of technology and recognition from the World Bank for innovation in services to the world?s poor. Our vision is for an India where no child is denied an education because of hunger and to end hunger in the UK via sustained nutrition.
