Recipient Org: Description Free to Be supports particularly disadvantaged London children who are not fulfilling their potential due to limited confidence, destructive self-narratives, or other social and emotional difficulties, to change their stories about who they are, and who they can be. We achieve this predominantly via taking children out of London for nature based residential projects and overnight adventures. Through nightwalks through the woods, building rafts and paddling across lakes, cooking together in groups, camping out under the stars and a host of other activities, we help children used to feeling different, rejected, and that they can't succeed, to instead experience feeling adventurous, proud, talented and successful - often for the first time in a long time. For those most in need, we offer longer term support via our 'Journey Programme' (more intensive series of residentials spread over a year) and London based mentoring. We are rigorous around measuring both need for, and impact of, our support. In 2019: -98% had extremely disadvantaged backgrounds, including living with parents with addiction or mental health difficulties; facing homelessness/housing instability; acting as Young Carers; or living in poverty. -96% experienced emotional, behavioural or social issues, including mental health issues; difficulties with relationships; with trusting others; or with believing in themselves. -50% were either at risk of, or had already experienced, exclusion from school, or had been the subject of a referral to Social Services, within the last year. Following attendance: 98% reported indicators of improved resilience, including feeling trustworthy and brave. 92% reported trying things they'd never before felt possible, 99% increased in self-confidence. These children have been particularly severely impacted by Covid, with more than 1 in 10 losing a family member. Your support would help us provide breaks for children who are now more in need of them than ever before.
