Recipient Org: Description | St John's is a parish church in the Carlisle Diocese. The Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of supporting and maintaining the church as both a religious and an historic building. The church is always open for public worship, family celebrations such as baptisms and weddings and for funerals, quiet reflection and prayer. It is the focus for community celebrations such as Harvest and is used by the church school. The churchyard is open to the whole community. Parishioners of any faith can be buried there, The PCC has 8 members from an electoral role of 60 people. A Heritage Group was set up in 2018 to co-ordinate plans to repair and restore the church building, develop the site for nature and to improve facilities on-site, providing toilets and a resource centre. The Heritage Group is made up of church members and others from the community. Over the last three years the group has set up exhibitions and organised events, obtained funding from a range of bodies and commissioned research into the history of the Hall Waberthwaite site. Members of an active History Group have contributed to the above as well as collecting oral history and doing academic research. |
