Recipient Org: Description CentrePeace is the vision of three friends who wanted to create a welcoming space for people to come together and help one another. A building was found; rented, renovated and refurbished by local volunteers. CentrePeace opened as an independent, open-hearted community support centre in May 2013; its primary aim being to promote community cohesion and well-being through providing, or connecting people with; services, resources, activities and social networks in our neighbourhood, whilst acting as a meeting ground for people from all sectors of society. In addition to providing crisis support for those most marginalised in society, the charity also offers everyone the chance to share their gifts, grow their talents and develop new friendships. It is genuinely a grassroots, asset-based community development. Open 6 days a week, our 63 strong volunteer-led centre, welcomes people of all ages, offering: a friendly café serving fair-trade coffee, handmade cakes and freshly cooked vegetarian meals; a charity shop with competitive prices; informal indoor and outdoor socialising areas; counselling rooms; an ICT suite, large training room and allotment. Each day, our trained companions meet visitors either at the centre or in people's homes nearby; helping with form-filling, phone calls, paperwork, a listening ear and mediation. Our training room is used daily with courses, art/craft groups, health activities, creative workshops, multicultural classes and therapeutic support groups. We have developed a highly regarded counselling service and established tripartite agreements with 5 regional counselling colleges. Both qualified and student counsellors gift their time here. For those in crisis, we offer time, warmth, food parcels, shower and laundry facilities, clothing, bedding and free meals. Each Christmas, we make 50 hampers of festive food and presents for families in need. Every summer, we hold a Summer Fayre in the neighbourhood park bringing our community together for fun, food and entertainment.
