Recipient Org: Description Abacus Counselling Services was created in response to a local need for an independent organisation to provide individual, personal and confidential support to tackle a range of issues. Since first established in December 1998, Abacus has helped support individuals from vulnerable areas of the local community to deal with problems ranging from substance and alcohol abuse to domestic violence and individuals experiencing anxiety and depression. In that time Abacus has supported a diverse group of beneficiaries that live within disadvantaged areas of Coventry. Abacus activities fall within three main strands of current intervention and they are: Homeless Families and Children Unemployed Our current provision range across a spectrum of services which meet these objectives: • Relationships • Family mediation • Services to School children • Loss and bereavement • Homelessness • Anxiety and depression • Individuals affected by unemployment Abacus has developed partnership links with local schools where it has facilitated a supportive service for pupils and their families who are experiencing affective issues within their life circumstance. We also liaise with Virgin Care who is in a partnership agreement with the local Primary Care Trust and refers homeless clients to the Anchor Centre, where Abacus holds a weekly drop in facility. Abacus has links with the DWP and Job Clubs in Coventry and receives referrals from unemployed individuals. Abacus also offer our service free of charge to the most deprived and vulnerable members of the community, wherever needed as they are the ones who find the service hardest to access. By offering a free self-referral service, we have been able to reach out to individuals in the community who need help the most.
