| Recipient Org: Description | Salaam Women’s Café has been running weekly during term time since October 2017 in the Cottonmill area of St Albans. We are open for 2 hours each week in St Julian's Church Hall and aim to provide a safe, welcoming space for people, of mainly South Asian heritage to come and socialize, make crafts and learn English using Creative English, a drama-based method to teach English to those whose first language is not English. Since 2017 the English teaching curriculum has covered a wide range of practical areas including: going to the doctor/ pharmacy/ hospital, speaking to Landlords/ your child's teacher. We spent the whole of last year focussing on a wide range of health issues. This year we are focussing on progression and skills towards employment. There is a small area for pre-school children to play, so that parents with young children can attend. We also have other services attend from time to time to support and promote services that might be relevant to this community. The supportive environment means that advice and a listening ear is often sought, which may result in contact with other service providers. |
