Bike without Barriers - Watford (360G-HertsCF-A763821)

Quercus have funded HDSF with this Bike without Barriers project for the last three years (A612670, A658443, A717255) and have always been very impressed, hence approaching them with the opportunity to apply for a three year grant. The Bikes Without Barriers project is for pupils at primary schools in deprived areas of Watford. • We will run a bike donation campaign locally. We have also established a source of unwanted bikes through HCC Re-use Centres. • HDSF’s qualified bike mechanics repair donated bikes. • All pupils attend a ‘Fun Skills’ session – an informal assessment which enables us to identify children who are unable to ride a bike without stabilizers, and those which don’t have a bike: o Those who can ride, have a skills session to prepare them for Level 1 Bikeability o Those who can’t pedal independently receive Learn to Ride training. During the first session, pupils use our specialist lightweight bikes. o The second session focusses on those who were unable to ride in the first session, ensuring they have more time to practice and progress. Those who need a bike receive a reconditioned bike and new helmet. o For those who own a bike we service bikes which aren’t roadworthy. o We provide additional 1:1 training if necessary. • We coordinate with HCC Cycle Training Team to (wherever possible) ensure that Bikeability training is scheduled after our project, helping these children progress further.
