Specialist instrumental lessons (360G-LeedCF-A704750)

Our most recent success is becoming a registered charity after running as a non-profit voluntary led community organisation for 2 years. Charity status was part of a longer-term strategic plan to expand our provision and position within the non-profit sector. Since setting up Accessible Inclusive Music (AIM) in 2021 challenges have included running our existing online inclusive choir for free for its first year solely on community fundraising. However, funding success was achieved in 2023 through a Scope connecting communities grant, recognising the benefit of our online inclusive choir, and enabling it to run for free into year 2.

Recipient Org: Description We are a charity providing accessible and inclusive extra-curricular musical opportunities for children and young people, including those that are disabled/have additional needs across the UK. Currently, we run an inclusive online choir for all children/young people up to the age of 18 across the UK, for those who are disabled/have additional needs and those who don’t consider themselves disabled or to have additional needs. The design of the rehearsals are underpinned by the Social Model of disability and a range of options are included to ensure all participants can actively join in; singing, signing, moving to music, playing an instrument and using eye gaze devices/switches. Our organisation is committed to inclusion and we have received a Scope inclusive activity award. Activities are designed to offer high quality music making alongside supporting positive wellbeing, improving participant self-esteem and confidence. Future plans include offering subsidised instrumental lessons for children and young people who are disabled and/or have additional needs and their siblings. Lessons would be with specialist practitioners and where required using adapted instruments, including eye gaze and one-handed instruments for those who are physically disabled. Offering activities subsided/for free is a core objective of our organisation as families with children and young people who are disabled or have additional needs are often disadvantaged financially due to costs of specialist equipment/services. This financial burden can also impact on siblings; therefore, our inclusive choir is free to all participants and we plan to include siblings in the subsidised instrumental lesson offering.
