Recipient Org: Description Battle Scars is a 100% survivor led and run self-harm specific charity. Our vision is to make sure nobody who struggles with self-harm, in whichever form, fights alone, and to break down the stigma surrounding self-harm. Our definition of self-harm is broad: any harm done to the body or mind, external or internal, with short or long-term effect. Self-harm is sadly very widespread and increasing, with very little targeted help available. We offer support to people of all ages and genders by providing varied support which includes UK-wide virtual services (peer groups, professional training), local face-to-face assistance (age-specific groups, school programmes), West Yorkshire phone support, moderated global Facebook group, popular webinars, addiction programme and various free resources including a youth journal. We boast no waiting lists, simple access, and responsive development driven by open dialogue with users, volunteers, staff, and trustees. In 2022/23, 3,600 individuals directly benefited from our support. We build better awareness of self-harm's complexity, roots and reasons resulting in anybody affected receiving non-judgemental, genuine peer support, acceptance and understanding so they can build a healthier future for themselves. We create safe environments where people affected by self-harm can be themselves, where weaknesses are turned into strengths and people’s talents are nurtured. Our work results in prevention, early and, more importantly, suitable interventions as well as contributes towards suicide prevention. We’re currently working on the development of the Onward Mental Health Hub in South Leeds, and planning on drastically increasing service provision in our first-ever premises.
