Indigenous Maritime Knowledge – Discovering 300 Years of Hidden History (360G-LloydsRegisterFdn-H-100038)

The IMK project unveils Inuit maritime expertise recorded in Greenland and Labrador. As the Arctic environment undergoes rapid climate change and increased shipping activity. IMK makes previously inaccessible archival knowledge - documented by missionaries and Inuit knowledge holders - available for integration into modern knowledge driven navigation and governance systems. These records describe safest navigation routes, sea-ice conditions, environmental change, hunting practices, and maritime accidents. Using AI-assisted tools and GIS mapping, the project digitises and analyses handwritten materials, co-creating outputs with Indigenous communities. The results directly support safer Arctic navigation, infrastructure planning, and climate adaptation for mariners, communities, and decision-makers.
