Recipient Org: Description Citizens Advice Daventry & District has been empowering local people through building knowledge, skills and confidence to overcome financial problems, claim benefit entitlements and manage debt since 1999. Our aims are: 1. To ensure that individuals do not suffer through lack of knowledge of their rights and responsibilities or of the services available to them, or through an inability to express their needs effectively and 2. To exercise a responsible influence on the development of social policies and services both locally and nationally Last year, our team of 24 volunteer advisors and nine, mostly part-time staff, provided information, advice and support to 4,622 people. By far the most common issues were financial - we helped: • 33% with benefits advice • 13% with debt • 13% with housing (including evictions). • 29% needed help with multiple issues, most frequently benefits and debt. Paid Advisors oversee complex cases and supervise volunteers. Approximately 61% of people we support with benefits advice have disabilities. In total we helped people claim £1,027,926 in benefits and reduce debt by £974,425. We also supported people with 144 appeals – all were successful, pointing to a systemic fault within the welfare system. Wherever possible, we upskill people, so they are better informed of their rights and more able to manage their finances long-term.
