Housesteads Roman Fort: Shared Horizons (360G-NLHF-HZ-24-00556)

Housesteads is Britain’s most complete Roman fort, situated on Hadrian’s Wall, two miles east of Sycamore Gap. In contrast to other sites along Hadrian’s Wall, Housesteads Roman Fort is experiencing a decline in visitors, placing the heritage at risk of being undervalued and forgotten. Visitors tell us that inadequate facilities, poor accessibility and limited, dated interpretation impact their experience. The site is jointly managed by English Heritage and the National Trust. In partnership, English Heritage, the National Trust, Northumberland County Council and Northumberland National Park Authority will address Housesteads’ challenges whilst celebrating the site as a breathtaking natural meeting place for stories and cultures. We will reinvigorate and broaden the interpretation, involve local communities in creating inspiring activities and volunteering opportunities, promote sustainable tourism, upgrade facilities, streamline management structures and improve accessibility. Combined, these activities will allow more people to connect with nature and their shared heritage.
