Recipient Org: Description Our aim is to provide high-quality, evidence-based information and support, free at the point of service, to all local pregnant and postnatal parents to help them to breastfeed their babies for as long as they wish. The increased health risks for both mother and baby associated with little or no breastfeeding are costly both in individual and public health terms, so providing timely, appropriate and skilled support for breastfeeding families is vital in reducing health inequalities. We run four two-hour drop-in sessions each week, in locations around Oxford and have been providing this service for 12 years and have supported thousands of families to breastfeed for as long as they wish. Our model is to provide friendly, open access, drop-in sessions where parents can talk to trained Peer Supporters (volunteers) as well as get help for more complex feeding challenges from our highly skilled specialists (Lactation Consultants and Breastfeeding Counsellors). We work closely with health professionals, supporting mothers with mental health problems and referring when appropriate. We are currently the only service in Oxford city providing specialist feeding support for families with babies over the age of 6 weeks and many families are referred to us by health professionals (Midwives, Health Visitors and GPs). Peer Supporters are volunteers that attend our 6 week training course to learn essential skills for this sensitive role and some go on to further training in infant feeding or midwifery. They are an integral part of our successful model, providing a listening ear and serving as role models for breastfeeding and mother and child relationships. We also provide monthly antenatal presentations and administer a busy Facebook group - currently over 1100 local members - where mothers can support each other 24/7 and ask our team more technical or complex questions.
