Recipient Org: Description The Story Museum highlights the human need for stories and celebrates the many ways that people benefit from engaging with great stories and creating stories of their own. Our vision is to enrich lives, especially young lives, through story. Our mission is to achieve this by developing a most unusual museum that collects and shares great ways of engaging with great stories. The Story Museum uses the power of story to stimulate the imagination, build confidence and foster learning in both a formal education context and in an informal way for our public family visitors. Many children in the UK today are growing up in ‘word poverty’ which limits their achievement and aspirations. UK statistics on children’s spoken and written language, well-being, school and workforce readiness, show this to be a growing problem and Government figures indicate that 1 in 6 people in the UK struggle with reading and writing – with a literacy level below that expected of an 11-year-old. Here in Oxford, despite the city's international status as a centre of learning excellence, the problem is very acute.. In 2010 Oxford City was the lowest ranking district in the country for reading and writing.
