Recipient Org: Description The Wychwoods Day Centre exists to reduce isolation and to offer social opportunities to very elderly, frail people from the three Wychwood villages - Ascott under Wychwood, Milton under Wychwood and Shipton under Wychwood. It is the only type of day care provision in this rural community where meeting others and respite for carers has been made increasingly difficult by the cuts in public transport. We aim to enable and to support our 22 members to remain in their own homes for as long as possible and to stay within a familiar community . We meet once a week in the New Beaconsfield Hall. The elderly members are transported in by volunteer car drivers, have coffee and biscuits before enjoying a varied range of activities - singing, a church service, exercises and films. One of the recent additions is attendance by the preschool ( aged 2-4) to demonstrate dancing and singing skills and to share stories. Both generations have learned from each other. A two course home cooked lunch is provided by volunteer cooks followed by tea and an afternoon session of jigsaws, scrabble, dominoes or cards.. Before they leave for home tea and cakes are served. The average age is 86. Referrals come from health professionals, the surgery, the churches, Social Workers, family, neighbours and friends. 49 volunteers are involved - cooking, driving, caring and we have one part time paid coordinator who is health trained. She ensures that needs are met , a waiting list for places is maintained and volunteers' rotas are planned well in advance. We aim to provide a convivial environment which is stimulating, interesting and above all fun. In the words of one of our longest members " I would be lost without it".
