BANBURY GROUP (360G-OCF-A493646)

£5,000

We will set up a group for children with a parent in prison. The group will run for 12 monthly sessions. It will be important for the group to also have volunteers who could potentially work with children individually outside of the group providing role models and mentoring. The grant will enable us to recruit, vet, DBS check, supervise and pay volunteer expenses. We will hire a central Banbury location (the Mill Arts Centre) which has facilities children may not normally access. The funding will finance a skilled empathetic, tenacious professional to assess the families and their needs and build a relationship that children/young people feel encouraged and supported to attend ,s/he, will identify and liaise with contributors for the project The funding will provide healthy refreshments to ensure the children/young people feel nurtured and cared for at the project sessions. It will also provide materials such as craft supplies for the groups and contribute to funding skilled sessional workers such as art or music workers.

Recipient Org: Description Children Heard and Seen aims to support children who are impacted by parental imprisonment. We aim to raise aspirations in the children and young people to increase school attendance and performance; these children often face disadvantage and discrimination as a result of their social and economic position. Data gained from our initial questionnaires identified that 71% of parents/carers reported a negative impact on their child’s behaviour and educational attendance and performance following incarceration of their parent. 65% of boys with a parent in prison will go on to commit an offence themselves. Children Heard and Seen promotes social inclusion for children and young people impacted by parental imprisonment by providing targeted interventions in a child friendly supportive manner such as community 1:1 mentoring, group sessions, support and guidance for children, young people and their families, advocacy and partnership working to help mitigate the effects of parental imprisonment. We strive to ensure that children are identified, supported, equipped with skills, acknowledged and reflected in public policy. The group sessions are an opportunity for children to develop relationships with other children in similar situations, reducing feelings of stigma, shame, isolation and embarrassment, preventing offending and improving behaviour and educational attendance and outcomes.
