Didcot Numskills Challenge (360G-OCF-A493855)

£8,746

The aim is to address poor levels of mental maths and financial literacy in the Didcot area. We want to do that in three ways: 1) Placing qualified Quest for Learning numeracy tutors in 3 of the most needy schools to support 16 children in each and carry out family outreach. 2) Training 30 staff from the 9 Didcot primary schools and 6 neighbouring village schools to be able to use Numskills and Numskills Money throughout their classrooms and corridors. 3) Holding a Family Outreach Day to invite families to come to play the games and get to grips with mental maths. This would be held on a Saturday in a community centre on the new Great Western Park estate. We would liaise with the Didcot Schools Partnerships, the nearby Aureus School (where we are based) as well as Home Link workers.

Recipient Org: Description Quest for Learning is a registered education charity based in Didcot. We reach out to help children from low income families. In our literacy work, through our Reading Quest and BookQuest programmes, we aim to give children better life chances by developing their reading, spelling, comprehension, writing skills, etc. We have specialised staff tutors working with many disadvantaged children in primary schools each year. In our numeracy work, under our Numskills resource, we work alongside children struggling with mental maths. Children make considerable gains in their learning (data can be supplied) as well as major leaps in their confidence and self esteem after just 6 weeks or 9 hours of our tailor-made teaching. We have more than 20 years’ experience in running teaching projects focused in Oxfordshire and are proud of our impact. All pupils are tested by us before and after their literacy courses using nationally approved standardised tests. All numerical data is analysed. In our numeracy teaching, we analyse ongoing testing data taken from the classroom to ascertain improvements. We are all about making an impact on children's learning as well as supporting their families.
