Recipient Org: Description Wallingford Accessible Boat Club (WABC) is a voluntary, innovative community initiative which aims to get disabled folk – wheelchair users and ambulant – out and about on the River Thames on the Wallingford stretch in order that they can enjoy the water, the environment and recreational activities that river-use provides – just like able-bodied people do. Central to the WABC operation is the wheelyboat, a purpose built flat-bottomed craft with a drop-down bow door, enabling wheelchair users to simply roll-on and roll-off. Over the last year we have witnessed tremendous support from the local community, local government and a multitude of disability organisations in Oxfordshire which all see the huge benefits the wheelyboat operation promises for their members. Users will be able to take river trips either in small groups or, with the appropriate training, independently, to enjoy water-borne activities such as picnicking, fishing, nature watching or just general boating, all of which contribute to the quality of life. To put it simply, the wheelyboat brings them freedom on the water. if funding allows, we hope to conduct operational trials in July & August and stage a formal opening in September. Our plan is to run summer operational trials.
