Recipient Org: Description Universify Education is a charity committed to educational equality. We aim to increase access to highly-selective universities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds and to achieve our vision of a more diverse and inclusive higher education system. While ‘disadvantage’ comes in many forms we recognise it as students eligible for Free School Meals or Pupil Premium and other flags indicated by teachers, such as low progression rates to university in their area. We identified three barriers that disadvantaged students face when applying to highly-selective universities. These barriers include low aspirations, feeling out of place in a university setting, and limited attainment. We run a year-long programme for Year 10s aimed at tackling these barriers by increasing students’ aspirations, attainment, and the likelihood of making a successful application to a highly-selective university. Our programme starts with a week-long summer residential at the university of Oxford before students return at Easter for a 3-day GCSE revision weekend. Throughout the programme students receive monthly, 1-to-1, remote coaching by trained volunteers, who are recent or current undergraduates from UK universities. We use a longer runway than typical outreach interventions to boost GCSE attainment and to complement existing interventions, which mainly focus on Year 12.
