Starting a Conversation about Health (360G-OCF-A599349)

£14,865

Our project will target sedentary people over 65, particularly older men and people from minority ethnic communities, in the 10 most deprived wards in Oxfordshire to raise awareness of cardiovascular health and the benefits of exercise to health by ‘starting a conversation about health’. Our starting point will be listening to people rather than helicoptering solutions into communities, finding out ‘what matters to you’ and taking a holistic approach, addressing some of the exacerbating factors (bereavement and loss, financial issues and social isolation) in addition to raising cardiovascular awareness. We have a Five Point Plan: 1.Deliver 10 place-based, multi-disciplinary Road Shows, in busy community spaces in the 10 key areas of deprivation, with the aim of: > listening to ‘what matters to people ‘ > offering BP Cholesterol, BMI, Functional Fitness testing > giving out information packs (see 3 below) > offering welfare benefits advice, links to friendship and social opportunities and links to Late Spring bereavement support (through Community Information Networker presence) 2.Produce accessible copies of our English language specialist home exercise DVD for people in later life, ‘At Home’, with voice-over and subtitles in Bengali and Punjabi (we are already in the process of producing the DVD in Chinese and Urdu) 3.Work with the national and local charities British Heart Foundation, British Lung Foundation, Dementia Oxfordshire, as well Moving Medicine, Here for Health, Social Prescribers and local NHS colleagues to create and give out information packs on cardiovascular health – and how to be physically active and eat well. The pack would include DVD, written information (translated) and details of local exercise classes 4.Work with people within the communities to create advocates for change in the communities 5.Ensure people have knowledge of and the ability to participate in physical activities and opportunities.

The project will also benefit from existing partnerships we have built over a significant period across Oxfordshire, specifically contributing to more investment in Banbury, an area with pockets of deprivation and an emerging World Health Organisation Age Friendly Community. Age UK Oxfordshire Age UK Oxfordshire (AUKO) is an independent local charity, working within communities, supporting older people to stay independent and live later life to the full. We work with all older people but focus most resource on tackling inequality and reaching out to people who face a struggle, whether through low income, poor health or loneliness. Age UK Oxfordshire provides and comprehensive range of services for older people and their carers including: • Age of Creativity Festival-Annual Festival to celebrate creativity in later life • Oxfordshire Age Friendly Creative Network-A network to promote and support age friendly creativity in Oxfordshire • Community Information Network-Working in the community to support older people to live life to the full • Carers Oxfordshire-Carer’s support service • Dementia Oxfordshire -Dementia support service • Generation Games -Physical activity service • Homeshare-matching older people who need companionship with people who need affordable accommodation • Phone Friends- Telephone befriending service • Home support- Help in the home to support independence • Late Spring -Bereavement support service AUKO’s Creative Team There are 130 local Age UKs across the country (all independently constituted and linked by Age UK National). Since 2012, AUKO has been the only local Age UK in the country to have a dedicated Creative Team. The Creative Team is small, but achieves significant impact both locally, and as a national exemplar of best practice. Nationally We manage the Age of Creativity (AOC) network and annual Festival celebrating creativity with for and by older people. We also lead a national network of local Age UKs interested in developing their creative and cultural delivery in different parts of the country. Locally We lead the Tea Books project supporting older people to engage in over 20 supported reading groups, the Oxfordshire Age Friendly Creative Network (OAFCN) of local partners committed to creativity in later life, and the Oxfordshire Age Friendly Creative Ambassadors (AFCA) project, a group of older people who advise on local age friendly creative initiatives and guide us in all of our work. Mill Arts Centre A well-established cultural hub in Banbury and the only dedicated arts provision in the area, the Mill Arts Centre has a vision is to inspire creativity and enrich the lives of local communities by providing a high quality, varied artistic, education and participatory programme. It plays a significant role in the cultural, social and economic development of Banbury by offering the local community the chance to engage with and be entertained by a variety of art forms. Key objectives are: • Inspire, stimulate and support creativity • Offer the widest range of unique learning opportunities across all age groups • Be open and accessible to all • Optimise the use of our resources and building • Generate enough income to ensure that we are here for years to come • Work in partnership with public bodies, business, education and community organisations and agencies To achieve these objectives the Mill Arts Centre offers three core strands of work: • Live events and film screenings including theatre, dance, music and comedy • Participatory workshops, events and experiences including performing arts, visual arts and craft and holistic wellbeing • Visual art exhibitions The Mill works with a wide range of local artists to realise these core strands, plays a pivotal role in local community arts practice and has a strong track record of delivering age friendly and family friendly arts programmes, activities and projects. Local Partnerships Banbury The Mill Arts Centre and Age UK Oxfordshire’s Creative Team have worked in partnership on creative and artistic projects very successfully on previous occasions including the Culture Club at the Mill Virtual Age Friendly Art and Dance project in 2021, Art By Post: Of Home and Hope touring exhibition in 2021 and the Banbury Age Of Creativity Festival programme in 2019. These projects incorporated elements of the proposed Paint the Town for the Jubilee project and we feel confident that we have tested the concept, understand the challenges and know the value we can bring to the local community. Oxfordshire The Oxfordshire Age Friendly Creative Network is an Oxfordshire wide community of interest with over 300 members including cultural partners, health and social care partners, academics and older people. Anyone with an interest in age friendly creativity can join the OAFCN and receive the monthly OAFCN e-newsletter, participate in our age friendly creative networking events and receive advice and support from the Age Friendly Creative Co-ordinator (who will be Project Lead for the Paint the Town for the Jubilee project). OAFCN supports cultural and creative partners including Theatres, Arts Centres, Libraries, Museums, Music Venues and Creative Practitioners to develop their age friendly creative offer for older people living in Oxfordshire to ensure the arts are accessible to everyone. We prioritise collaborative working and are well placed to include other partners in our project delivery plan and to collect evidence of “what works” and disseminate the learning across OAFCN and beyond. Most importantly of all we want to celebrate the achievements and creativity of older people and challenge stereotypes. The annual Age of Creativity Festival takes place in May each year and the theme for 2022 is 'A Call to Action', reflecting the significant shifts that have taken place because of Covid-19 and the widening inequalities many people face. Both Age UK Oxfordshire and the Mill Arts Centre will bring a significant amount of support in kind to this project via their existing promotional networks and expertise.
