Oxford Paddlers for Life annual running costs (360G-OCF-A622248)

£3,539

Oxford Paddlers for Life is unique in Oxfordshire, it is the only dragon boat team offering dragon boat paddling to cancer patients and their families within Oxfordshire. In fact the nearest other regularly paddling dragon boat teams are the Wave Walkers, 85 miles away in Royal Docks, East London, and Pink Champagne, at Hengistbury Head, Christchurch, near Bournemouth 95 miles away. This grant would cover the running costs for Oxford Paddlers for Life for a whole year, as we have no paid staff, and minimal overheads. It would allow us to offer the benefits of paddling a dragon boat to 30 people twice per week during the summer months, and once per week during the winter months, at no cost to any individual. It would enable us to cover the travel costs for individuals who would otherwise not be able to afford to come to Dorchester Sailing Club to paddle. In addition it would enable us to cover the travel costs for experienced helms from other cancer dragon boat teams to come to Oxford in order to continue the training and development of our helms. We have done basic helm training (as recognised by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority) and would like to build on this in order to extend our skills. Specific costs it would cover are: - insurance to cover boats, buoyancy aids, paddles and other equipment, and members public liability insurance - berthing fees at Dorchester Sailing Club for 2 dragon boats and 2 O1 kayaks - cost of use of the Dorchester Sailing Club lake at £17.50 per hour - petrol money or public transport money contribution for 3 financially disadvantaged people to travel to Dorchester from as far away as Banbury per month - pot of money to pay for a contribution towards petrol money for visiting helms that help train and develop our helms - money for laminating pouches, printer ink and business cards for publicity and recruitment - Environment agency fees for paddling on the river (£10.50 per boat, 4 boats)

Recipient Org: Charity Number 1178628
Recipient Org: Description Oxford Paddlers For Life was created to promote and support the good physical and mental health of people who have been affected by cancer, in particular but not exclusively breast cancer, and their friends and family by providing facilities and training in dragon boating in Oxfordshire. The aim is to keep things fun, full of camaraderie and mutual support. Prior to this pandemic, we had been receiving enquiries weekly from new cancer patients through referrals from the Maggie’s Centre and by word of mouth. Although we have continued to welcome new members during the pandemic, most have been unable to paddle as yet as they feel unsafe going out due to their treatment and rising levels of anxiety about the increasing case numbers of Covid-19. We expect our membership to continue to grow once we can actively recruit again. We are an inclusive charity, with diverse backgrounds and many additional protected characteristics (Equality Act, 2010): including socially deprived areas of Oxfordshire, for example Blackbird Leys (IDACI decile 2). The Macmillan report ‘No Small Change’ (website 2021) reports that four out of five people with cancer are on average £570 a month worse off because of their diagnosis, our membership is a donation or free. It is important this option is retained. especially when people's finances can be very limited due to the financial impact of the pandemic. In particular, paddling in a dragon boat after breast cancer has been shown to by reducing physical and psychological symptoms such as tiredness and some treatment side effects; reducing anxiety and depression; improving mood and quality of life; strengthening muscles, joints and bones; improving heart function and reducing the risk of other health problems; and significantly reducing the risk breast cancer recurrence (McKenzie, JAMC, Aug 1998; McKenzie, Behind the Pink Ribbon podcast, Ep 20, 2020; Macmillan 2021). In addition, as a team, we have seen that the partners and children (adult and teenager) of those affected by cancer have found paddling and other group activities has reduced their own personal isolation and loneliness.
