Recipient Org: Description Bridgwater Arts Centre (BAC) was set up in 1946 to promote and advance education through the performing and visual arts. Current objectives within the business plan are to improve the well-being of community we serve through creative learning and participation, as well as raise the quality of the arts on offer. As part of our wider offer, BAC aims to establish itself as a friendly, safe, creative space in Bridgwater for a people experiencing mental health issues through supported creative activities. To do this, we are partnering with other community agencies and public bodies, such as MIND, Seed of Hope, GPs and Somerset Partnership Mental Health Services. We are advocating a community-centred approach which seeks to mobilise the assets such as social networks & current knowledge within Bridgwater, Sedgemoor and Somerset to increase good practice, and people’s control over their health and lives. Through partnership working we aim to identify local issues through consultation with residents, devise solutions together and build sustainable local activities. We aim to increase participation and volunteering through the process in order to encourage social interaction and the development of personal confidence and life-skills. BAC’s programme offers a wide range of music, drama, dance, comedy, talks, talent shows and children’s events in the theatre in the day. Daytime activities in the gallery and other meeting rooms include exhibitions and art classes, Knit n Knatter, the Willow Group supporting people with cancer, a Morning Choir and Writer’s Corner. Evening activities include a Community Choir, Yoga, the Book Club, Sign Language, Salsa Dance, Jazz, Acoustic, Storytelling, Folk Sessions and Quiz Nights, alongside the Young Musical Theatre Company and Blake Drama rehearsals and events. Further activities include counselling sessions with a qualified Cognitive Behaviour Therapist, and a DBT group run through Somerset Partnership. Ad hoc activities include craft workshops and fairs, Chandos Art Society workshops, community days such as Portugal Day and the Quayside Festival, and projects such as the architectural project, CIAM 17 which is revisiting the ‘Congress Internationale de Architecture Moderne’ held in Bridgwater in 1947. The Arts Centre is run mainly by volunteers. Volunteer recruitment, training and support therefore is a high priority and BAC regularly runs Open Days and goes out into the community to encourage people of all ages and abilities to volunteer to everyone’s mutual benefit.
