Recipient Org: Description Charitable Aims "IN PARTICULAR, WSAB WAS ESTABLISHED TO PROMOTE CHARITABLE PURPOSES FOR THE STATED COMMUNITY BY THE ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION, THE PROTECTION OF HEALTH AND THE RELIEF OF POVERTY, DISTRESS, SICKNESS,DISABILITY, DISADVANTAGE AND DEPRIVATION" West Somerset Advice Bureau (WSAB) has been devoted to combating disadvantage, disability and deprivation in the West Somerset area since 1989. The charity offers free, independent, confidential advice and support to all local residents in need. This advice and support enables people to deal much better with their life problems by reducing social and economic disadvantage, deprivation and isolation, helps to improve health, and to educate local people to enable them to improve their life chances. Services provided Generic advice information and signposting Specialist Advice with casework in the social welfare law categories of; Welfare Benefits, debt, housing and homelessness. Financial capability project - improving budgeting and money management skills for individuals to improve life chances and combat poverty, disadvantage and financial exclusion. Advice & assistance is provided face to face, on the telephone or by email. Self help resources are available on the website www.westsomersetadvice.org.uk Rural cover: the face to face service is provided across West Somerset in Stogursey, Watchet, Williton, Dulverton and Porlock (from Feb 2018). Limited home visits are available for the housebound and rurally isolated. Transport may be arranged through Atwest. New delivery style - West Somerset decided to embed its services in other provision as not all residents understand how advice could help them. We work as a key partner within the Community Employment Hubs and the Adult Social Care 'Talking Cafes' to support the services. We still offer appointments in GP surgeries. Delivering advice where people are congregating is proving to be a good working model. The formal advice service however is still busier than ever with a 41% increase in footfall in Minehead during in this last year. Launch of an anti poverty strategy - with the high % of households across West Somerset identified as in child poverty (average of 30%) the low paid employment culture and the introduction of Universal Credit, West Somerset Advice has responded to the need to robustly address financial exclusion as its contribution towards improving life chances and social mobility. All people contacting the service are screened for financial exclusion indicators and invited to undertake a financial health check. This work seeks to maximise income and reduce outgoings and is linked to the financial capabilty project. We launched an online form to check the advice needs of people being issued with food boxes - we wish to identify household that can be assisted to afford to put food on the table. This work is a local initiative of the Financial Exclusion Unit. Social policy work - WSAB together with Citizens Advice throughout Somerset work to identify policy issues that may assist a greater number of people if problems were addressed. In this way we act as a pulse point to monitor the impact of social welfare reform or other policy changes and represent the problems faced by local people to authorities to seek to improve practice and where needed legislation. We have been active in campaigning for change with the introduction of Universal Credit through the social welfare reform group. We are currently working with the housing form to ask registered social landlords to submit to a check by a local panel prior to seeking possession for rent arrears. This panel is to check that the pre-court action protocol has been followed. The protocol requires referral to independent advice and no possession action issued where there is no problem with claiming housing costs ( for people who are eligible to gain assistance with the payment of rent). We remain concerned about the vulnerable profile of the people who contact us and the service review forms enables us to identify emerging issues and seek to adapt our services to meet the needs of the area. This work includes bidding for new projects and looking to innovate a drive action forward.
