Recipient Org: Description ‘The aim of Accessible Transport West Somerset is to provide a community transport service for such of the inhabitants of West Somerset and surrounding areas who are in need of it because of age, sickness, disability (mental and physical), disadvantage, deprivation or poverty, or because of a lack of availability of adequate and safe public passenger services’. We run a comprehensive service which enables individuals or groups to travel wherever they need to go, mainly within West Somerset, but often with hospital trips further afield. Musgrove Park, for example, is a 50 mile round trip from the Minehead area. Quite often, patients need to travel to Bristol, Exeter, Shepton Mallet, and beyond. In practice, this means that local people can attend medical appointments, shops, friends, go out for meals, visit partners in their care home, get to the station in Taunton, enjoy entertainment, and do what they need and want to do. As we have the highest ratio of elderly people here, many of whom cannot or do not wish to drive, this transport is vitally important. Through our community transport service, we aim to help our rural and socially isolated residents to lead a safe and normal life, to be happier and healthier, independent, to see to their own needs, and access local services. We aim to support local people to live in this beautiful yet isolated countryside area thus supporting its continuance economically and socially.
