Recipient Org: Description | The Transition Town movement is about communities coming together to find local solutions to the challenges of rising energy costs, climate change and dwindling natural resources. There are hundreds of towns, villages and communities across the UK and around the world signing up to become Transition Towns. Transition Town Wellington (TTW) aims to build a more self-reliant and resilient community, particularly concentrating on the localisation of food and energy production, dealing with waste, reducing our energy demands and bringing people together. Our economy and way of life are built on relatively cheap fossil fuels and we need to learn how to adapt as the cost of oil rises, as is already becoming evident. We began in 2008 and have held many events in the town, including film showings, Apple Days, the Big Energy Event and the Three Rs - Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. Our members have also been involved in planting a community woodland. We have good support from local councillors. |
