Recipient Org: Description The Angel is an established Community Hub serving Langport and neighbouring villages, centred around a thriving Volunteer-led Community Cafe facility. The Community Cafe offers good coffee, heavenly cakes and simple meals; all reasonably priced. Volunteers, at their own discretion, are encouraged to offer free drinks/food in cases of obvious need e.g. enquirers for the Food Bank which outgrew the space at The Angel where it began. This 'Angel Cafe' is the trading arm of the charity with all income ploughed directly back into supporting community activities, to subsidise/offer free room hire/refreshments for various community groups/charities at The Angel and out in the community or to renovate/update this listed ex-pub to create more accessible space and opportunities matched to local needs. To date we have renovated two first floor rooms i) a conference space equipped for larger groups. Current users room hire subsidised partly/wholly by The Angel include: DeafPlus for lip reading tuition/weekly LaLeche Breastfeeding & Parent Support/fortnightly School Parent Family Support Workers courses: April-June 2019 ‘Tuning into Kids’/’Recovering from Abuse’ Carers Support Group/monthly Dementia Action Alliance Meetings/Community Dementia-Friendly Training sessions Private Foster Care meeting birth parents sessions/quarterly Josephine's Star - a new charity supporting children bereaved of their parents to recruit/train volunteers Safe Families for Children, working alongside SCC reducing risk of children being taken into care, training sessions for volunteers/volunteer social The second smaller first floor room is soon to be dedicated for use by a newly-appointed Angel LISTENER, an experienced accredited counsellor/trainer available for support across the community, and specifically those accessing the weekly 'TALKING CAFÉ. Often these groups use the café bringing extra trade/footfall to allow us to subsidise/fund room hire;other regular full-rate bookings increase revenue to help balance the books in the long term. All of our current service-users have approached us when they look to plug a gap in local provision or respond to a locally identified need/problem having heard about the broad community support we offer. Open Wednesday to Saturday the Cafe space is free on Monday/Tuesday for community groups/activities. September 2018 saw the launch of a Monday morning TALKING CAFE (in partnership with Somersetrcc) with the Langport Surgery Village Agent present to help/signpost those seeking advice/support. The Angel covers the cost of hiring entire existing ground and first floor space floor café space and first floor rooms/toilet from 9.00am to 1.00pm, providing refreshments. Service users make donations as they can. With our constant aim of sustainability, happily, within the first 6 months refreshment costs were covered and some heating/lighting costs. Tuesday sees Somerset's Children's Autism Outreach Team's monthly coffee morning for parents/carers of children with autism; staff team meets upstairs in the afternoon. No direct charge is made to CAOT but donations/ charges for refreshments mean we share/cover costs effectively. Wednesday mornings see ANGEL COMPANY in the Cafe - the remainder of the old Langport Disability Group, who volunteer-less and unable to manage the rent of their previous venue of many years, came to The Angel seeking suggestions for a way forward. Working together to recruit a new band of dedicated Angel volunteers, we happily welcomed the remnant of the previous group adding through social media/local publicity/Talking Cafe more new friends who meet to paint, play cards, talk, colour, knit, talk, quiz and craft. This diverse group, 4 with learning disabilities in their 60s, 2 more in 40/50s, 2 living with dementia, others vulnerable through illness/bereavement/mental health issues, all gather with plenty of coffee or tea, seeking conversation, purpose, companionship and laughter, sharing a hearty fresh-cooked meal for £6.00, again covering costs to be self-sufficient and sustainable. One gentleman with LD now acts as a volunteer within the group. All these illustrate The Angel's first aim to listen and respond to the voiced needs of the community we are here to serve alongside our commitment as a volunteer-led not-for-profit charity to use income to develop community groups/improved community room resources. Individuals/groups now approach us seeking support to get local initiatives off the ground e.g. Langport Area Refugee Action (LARA) came seeking practical ways to moblise efforts of a small core group and encourage community involvement/social cohesion. The Angel is now the collection point for local donations of refugee aid, funding essential sanitary items for women and costs of local advertising/awareness raising, plus co-hosting/organising annual celebrations for Syrian refugees re-settled in Somerset. What we do and how we do it is summed up in the strapline that now accompanies our Angel logo: THE ANGEL : WORKING WITH OTHER CHARITIES & GROUPS TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHERE WE ARE or THE ANGEL : IN THE COMMUNITY, FOR THE COMMUNITY Currently in the last stages of our latest and biggest building renovation, by the summer an old skittle alley will be transformed into another, larger 98sq m first floor Community Room. Our determination is to ensure this new space is accessible to ALL who live in our community, especially those most at risk of exclusion or isolation. Our plans and specifications aim to provide space to help plug identified gaps in local provision for adults with learning disability and autism, evidenced by discussion/existing work with local supported living services/adults with learning disabilities living locally. Although most of these already feel at ease using the café as they can, for some a busy café is a difficult environment. The reality is that for those with more complex needs/profound disabilities, especially those who are non-verbal and communicate through gesture/ sounds/behaviours that others unaccustomed to them, find challenging. So in our normal listen and learn mode with adults with learning disabilities/their carers/service managers we recognise the enormous potential our long, safe garden also offers as an open environment with sensory stimulation which adults with autism/learning difficulties can access independently and interactively with greater potential to mix more comfortably and naturally in a mainstream cafe setting with local people of all ages and abilities sharing the outdoor space and sensory equipment, to actively promote better understanding and appreciation of the gifts autistic/learning disabled people offer.
