Recipient Org: Description | We aim to build a robust, sustainable and accessible community facility that will support the social and sporting needs of local residents and surrounding villages. To provide opportunities for alleviating isolation and social exclusion and to improve health and wellbeing. We provide a wide and varied calendar of events, aiming to hold a fundraising social event every month; these range from coffee mornings, community markets, jumble sales to themed quiz nights, musical evenings, village breakfasts and traditional barn dances. At the Recreation Centre we have well established weekly sporting clubs for badminton, table tennis and croquet, although all ages are welcomed most support comes from residents aged 60+ years. During the winter months croquet is played indoors and short mat bowls is also offered. The recreation ground is home to the Carhampton Cricket Club who have used the facilities for many years. The Carhampton Youth Club is also based at the Centre, the field and Multiple Use Games Area (MUGA) are extensively used during the year by members of the Youth Club. Pre-school family play session are reguarly held at the Rec Centre during term time. During the summer of 2018 a small meeting room at the Recreation Centre was designated as a parish heritage centre and a steering committee was set up to oversee the setting up, viability and funding required. The heritage room was decorated by volunteers and display cabinets were kindly donated by Minehead Museum. Information, historical records and photographs were collected and donated by local residents, with the aim that an exhibition would be put together to commemorate the centenary of the ending of WW1. The exhibition focused on soldiers from the parish who fought in the Great War and how life in the village was affected by it. Through donations, a fundraising talk and a small grant from the Feldberg Foundation enough money was raised to install suitable lighting and a historical timeline with key events highlighted over the past 2000 years. During the summer of 2019 a new exhibition featuring "Stories from Carhampton Parish" has been staged and the heritage centre has opened every Tuesday afternoon for visitors. This month a new exhibition "Apples, Orchards and Cider" will be staged and run until November when the heritage centre will close for the winter months. It is evident from the interest shown by both local residents and visitors to the area that there is a demand and a desire to learn more about the history of the village and surrounding area, and this in turn has brought more people to the Carhampton Recreation Centre making them aware of the facilities we have to offer. |
