Recipient Org: Description The purpose of The Minehead Shed is to provide a welcoming, friendly and accepting environment, where people can chat and make friends, and participate in creative activity. This will include woodworking, repairing and upcycling, the three most popular areas identified by those who attended one of our Open Meetings. These creative projects will include personal items, which will range from those requiring only the most basic skills, to those demonstrating highly developed skills; projects to benefit the wider community, such as the refurbishment and repair of noticeboards and benches; and making items for the Shed itself, such as workbenches. It has already been clear that working together leads to chatting and laughter. This leads to increased self-confidence, a greater feeling of self-worth, a renewed sense of purpose, and encourages the formation of friendships, thus combating loneliness and isolation. This in turn promotes mental, physical and emotional well-being. This will bring benefit especially to those who are socially excluded as a result of any of the following factors: unemployment, financial hardship, youth or old age, ill health (physical or mental.) Those who have moved to a new area can find it difficult to become integrated into the new community. The Minehead Shed will provide an entrée to a diverse and accepting group of people, which in turn can lead to other groups and interests. From the EDF Energy press release earlier this year, it seems likely that the number of workers at the Hinkley Point C site will increase to levels higher than originally planned, because of the pandemic. Workers and their families living in and around Minehead would be helped to integrate into the community by The Minehead Shed, thus promoting a sense of well-being and good mental and physical health, and avoiding any danger of isolation from the community. This integration, needless to say, would enrich the experience of the community, as well as the individuals. The activity in The Shed will improve levels of skill, as informal sharing takes place. It is expected that this will be at all levels, as those with only basic or even no skills in woodworking and repairing are shown how to use tools safely, and those with more advanced skills learn yet more. This sharing might even be extended to include other life-enhancing abilities. Our partnership with Somerset Skills and Learning has already been fruitful, as we have been donated furniture and craft tables for The Shed. It is anticipated that future cooperation will help us to provide informal community learning. The Minehead Shed welcomes all ages, and women as well as men. Our Facebook page shows a roughly equal proportion of men and women, and we have met young men as well as old at our Open Meetings. Those who retire often feel the loss of work friends, and an absence of purpose. The percentage of males of 65 and over for West Somerset is not far short double that of the whole of the UK, and is significantly greater than that for Somerset as a whole (Somerset Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, 2016). Attendance at our Open Meetings strongly suggests that The Minehead Shed will be popular among retired men, who are prone to loneliness and the loss of purpose that can result from finishing work. Nationally, Sheds are popular among retired men, and our contacts list shows that this will be the case in Minehead. Charitable, educational and community organisations in and around Minehead will also benefit, through the Shed's work repairing and constructing projects in wood. The Shed is already widely talked about in the town and beyond: we receive offers of tools, and requests to make items for schools and charitable organisations, which we cannot yet fulfill, as we need funds to make our Shed habitable. A partnership with Engage Furniture, which sells used furniture at reduced prices to those on benefits, will save more items going to landfill, and help the community. The Minehead Shed will be able to refurbish items that, at present, are below the standard required.
