Recipient Org: Description Age UK Somerset [AUKS] delivers as many workstreams to support people in later life as can be planned, scoped and implemented according to grant income or paid for services. As the charity for older people we started the new dementia-focused service: Cognitive Stimulation Therapy [CST] in October 2020, during the Covid pandemic, using remote technology to bring individuals together weekly, working with our trained facilitator/ co-orcdinator. Intended as a new face-to-face paid-for service AUKS has subsidised fees while we have been encouraging client engagement for the past year, but now that vaccinations can liberate people to join groups we have needed to set fees to aid full cost recovery. Our main casualty as a direct result of the pandemic has been our very successful Ageing Well exercises programme, including Falls prevention: Stay Strong Stay Steady. The essential re-focus for to us to deliver online Ageing Well classes sits up there with CST for how quickly and adeptly the organisation, it’s staff and volunteers, met the challenges to enable some continuity to the people we support. Working in “lockdown” has also provided some ‘headspace’. For a long time we have wanted to move from a traditional type of befriending; to move away from the sit-and-have-a-cup-of-tea style to getting people to engage with local groups (and our own Ageing Well classes). During the pandemic we asked our volunteers to ring people once a week, for our new phone-based befriending service: Friendly Phone Calls service, working in partnership with the Somerset Mental Health Alliance. Over 130 people have had a weekly phone call since March 2020. Now we are planning the transition to supporting people to go out for a walk: our new Active Befriending service, starting this autumn. The client’s pace and ability/ mobility will be at the centre of the walk they have, while a volunteer will provide company and encourage confidence for our clients who have we know lost mental as well as physical strength. Volunteers will also be encouraging clients to consider attending one of our Ageing Well classes, as another way of combatting a return to isolation.
