Recipient Org: Description Focus Frome is based at St John’s Cottage in the heart of Frome. We have three counselling rooms and employ 13 counsellors offering subsidized therapy to adults, children, young people and couples. In 2022, we delivered 1,621 counselling sessions. Of that number, 35% of those seen were children and young people. Clients receive an average of 10 weeks of subsidised counselling. They give an average donation of £24 per session, although a significant number pay less, and some require free counselling. The cost of a counselling session to Focus is £50 per session. Focus offers affordable counselling on a sliding scale, we do not means test, we ask clients for a donation towards the cost of counselling based on trust, thereby helping people of all socioeconomic backgrounds to access life-improving therapy. They offer what donation they can and we find the funding to fund the rest. In this way, we have helped those with eating disorders, addiction, bereavement, childhood abuse, trauma, depression, anxiety and much more. At the start of 2022, the government had advised a work from home edict. Despite this we continued to offer counselling either online, via telephone or more creatively using walk and talk. This helped ensure that our most vulnerable clients continued to be supported at this difficult time. We also created a counselling bench in the adjoining churchyard. An analysis of evaluation forms showed that 90% of clients rated the service as very helpful with 10% clients rating the service as Helpful 90% clients felt that their counsellor understood their problems and feelings 92% clients felt that they had received relief through being able to talk about their problems. 90% clients felt that the counselling had enabled them to find ways of resolving problems 98% clients felt that the counselling had helped them to cope with their feelings 94% clients felt that the counselling had improved their relationships with others 87% clients felt that the counselling had given them a clearer sense of future direction 77% clients felt that the spiritual aspect of their counselling experience was helpful to them 100% clients would recommend the service to others Due to unprecedented demand for our subsidised counselling service in Frome, we have been asked by Mendip YMCA to use some of their rooms in Wells to offer a safe space for people struggling with their mental health and serve the local community. Focus Wells began in March 2023 and is already seeing 3 clients per week, working on Mondays. There are no current services in Wells offering affordable counselling to families, couples or young people and Focus Wells hopes to bridge that gap. Focus Wells is grateful to Mendip YMCA for welcoming us and offering three rooms in the heart of the smallest city in the UK.
