Recipient Org: Description | The YMCA Brunel Group is a self-governed part of the YMCA this means we need to find our own local funding for aspects of our work with children, teenagers and young adults. We provide 147 safe beds every night for 16 to 25 year olds in Bath, Bristol, Somerset and Mendips along with Adult housing in Wells. Many of the young people we work with have come from the care system or trying to escape conflict at home or found themselves living in unsafe situations. In 2023 we opened Arthur’s House, a hostel for 16/18 year olds in Glastonbury (then supporting 4 of the most at risk young people in the county) Our additional supported housing is situated throughout Bath, Keynsham, Yeovil, Frome, Street, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and Wells. With young adults leaving the care system or difficult home environments, they are often vulnerable and access homelessness services. They often lack the stability, skills and emotional support to live independently. This can result in a cycle of debt, lifestyle choices that make them more vulnerable or preyed upon leading to homelessness. We offer a safe space to live in, emotional support and services to help bridge the gap to independent living, helping them to belong, contribute and thrive. The best thing we do is provide consistency it's not a particular event , its steady regular normality to individuals who have lacked steadiness. A place to feel safe, heard and seen . We also run 12 youth clubs - Our Youth Project aims to support Young People aged 10-19 years old to raise their aspirations, increase their confidence and help them achieve their goals. We also provide focussed work with Young People with crime and anti-social behaviour. Part of this process is Detached Work with our Youth Workers visiting areas where young people meet- parks, estates, derelict areas, quiet hidden spaces – building trust and relationships to help sign post them towards finding support or coming to our Youth Clubs . Also 2 Young Carers groups in Pilton and Yeovil, for children who look after a parent and often siblings, here they have the opportunity to stop for a couple of hours and feel supported themselves. We operate 8 Ofsted registered preschools Nurseries around Wiltshire in Trowbridge, Malmesbury, Corsham, Chippenham, Lyneham and Calne. We attract a wide range of parents/carers to our settings, staff teams are highly qualified and our YMCA ethos is to bring the community together and support families too. The majority of our settings are in the more deprived communities where higher quality providers choose not to operate because of viability issues. We find there are often more learning issues with the pre-school children meaning higher needs for our staff to support. The staff are often under pressure dealing with a variety of issues, sometimes involving social services. |
