| Recipient Org: Description | Minehead and Coast Development Trust (MCDT) is a community-led charity working for the social, economic, and environmental benefit of Minehead. Minehead is a rurally isolated, disadvantaged community in West Somerset, which is identified as the UK's least socially mobile area by the Social Mobility Index 2016/17. MCDT functions as a community "anchor" organisation operating at a hyperlocal level while being well-established enough to connect successfully with local authorities and the public sector. We are a formative member of the Minehead People and Place Partnership (MPAPP), which includes members from Minehead Town Council and Somerset Council, as well as organisations operating in the environmental, business and youth service sectors. This partnership meets monthly to develop and deliver projects for the benefit of Minehead and its community, encouraging partnership working amongst members to increase impact and community resilience. MCDT's work includes transformational and regenerative projects that boost community cohesion and connectedness, improve socio-economic opportunities, and improve Minehead as a place to live, work and visit. MCDT was created in 2010 from a shared desire to purchase the vacant town centre's Grade 2 listed 100-room Edwardian hospital from the NHS. While unsuccessful at the time, the idea of co-locating many town services including the library, Minehead Town Council offices, Citizen's Advice Information Centre and Museum, brought the community together. MCDT then went on to successfully help rehouse and operate the Information Centre, more recently linking it with the Minehead Museum. In 2021, we led on the creation of a socio-economic plan for Minehead, which keeps the environment and sustainability at the centre of our plans. We are currently facilitating and delivering several projects identified in this action plan, as well as emerging projects and initiatives. For example, in 2022, we launched the Minehead Bay Festival of art and culture as a pilot project as part of the Enterprising Esplanade scheme and have recently delivered the second event on 2nd September 2023. This event exceeded all expectations in footfall and interest and saw over 3000 people from the community and surrounding villages come together. These formative pilot years showed us how much this event boosts pride in place and community wellbeing and cohesion by bringing our community together on the seafront to enjoy art, culture, music and food and to celebrate what makes Minehead unique. We aspire to develop this annual event into a wider, more comprehensive programme of arts and culture activities to strengthen year-round cultural capacity. In March 2023, we launched a project which saw three environmental events planned in partnership with Somerset Wildlife Trust's Wilder Coast Project, Exmoor National Park and the National Trust. These events, commonly known as a BioBlitz, have engaged with over 300 people in the community in 2023. These events contribute to improving biodiversity and increase the community's connection to nature and access to the outdoors by encouraging individuals to submit ecological records using an easy-to-use smartphone app called iNaturalist. This data is then submitted to the Somerset Environmental Records Centre (SERC), and is used to inform conservation work and plans, and monitor the health of our local ecosystems. In January 2023, we launched a project in partnership with Watchet-based organisation, the Onion Collective, to map Minehead's social capital, which has never been attempted before in Minehead. This project involved a free community workshop to map the non-profits and community groups that exist in Minehead, and the connections and partnerships that link these groups. Through this project, we have created a dynamic map that enables us to visualise our community landscape, and understand the nature of our community, what builds it and what harms it. The map enables us to see where partnership working is already taking place and where there is potential for closer working relationships and collaboration. This results of the work that come out of this map strengthen the community's resilience in the face of future challenges by ensuring strong interlinking relationships between groups, facilitating the sharing of resources, funding, skills and support. Through our varied projects and far-reaching community work, we act, not only as a delivery organisation for projects in Minehead, but also as a facilitator and enabler for projects that otherwise might not receive the support they need to get off the ground. For example, in 2023, a resident of Minehead approached MCDT about running a poetry competition. The poetry competition was run and delivered by the local resident, with support from MCDT and Minehead Town Council. 17 poems were received from the community, and the winning entries will soon be printed and displayed in the shelters on the seafront for all to enjoy. The Poetry Competition forms part of our wider remit to boost access to art and culture in Minehead, and builds on earlier projects such as a Photography Competition which saw community members enter their photographs of Minehead for a chance to have them featured in the open air gallery on the seafront. |
