Recipient Org: Description Home-Start West Somerset’s (HSWS) vision is to give children the best possible start in life by offering support to any parent or carer of children, less than five years of age, who requests our services either directly or through a partner agency. Our professional staff and volunteers offer a listening ear, empathy, and encouragement to parents who maybe feeling overwhelmed or isolated. Volunteers help with practical tasks such as childcare, household chores, running errands, advice with routines, behaviour management and accessing community resources to alleviate some of the pressures faced by families. Volunteers provide information, referrals and signposting to other local services and resources which can support individual families' needs. HSWS also offers a comprehensive Montessori-endorsed programme of additional specific parenting programmes including the following: Bump-Start: providing ante-natal and post-natal support, including Real Birth Workshops, Solihull parenting techniques and basic baby care through parenting classes. Baby Massage: a ratified and qualified delivery of IAIM baby massage. Baby-Start: a structured group fostering good parental mental health and enhancement of children’s well-being and development. Baby & Brunch: Drop-in weekly sessions. Each session includes a light-touch PEEP offer. Dad Matters: This intervention facilitates “Dad Chat” groups. Our coordinator facilitates discussions, offers support and signposts to relevant services. Tuning into Kids: Our trained facilitators of the Tuning into Kids program offer a 6-week delivery package centred around emotionally intelligent parenting. Story Start: Parents are encouraged, by role modelling, to interact, communicate, and share songs, books and stories with their babies and young children. SHINE: a monthly support group for families of children with additional needs and disabilities. School Start: a summer-term programme of activities designed to prepare parents and pre-schoolchildren for learning in Early Years settings. Full Tummies: a healthy and budget-friendly family cooking project. Holiday Activities: We offer families fun craft and cooking activity sessions during the school holidays. Overall, HSWS plays a vital role in supporting families in the local community, helping to strengthen parent-child relationships, enhancing parenting skills, and promoting the well-being of both parents and children. Through early intervention, HSWS can have a real impact on a child’s life chances. The best thing HSWS has achieved in the past year through its extensive and developing provision is being able to help and support 637 families. HSWS is also now producing more effective family-led evaluations and assessments. This provides evidence of the family’s outcomes in quantative and qualitive data, recording the improved and positive impact HSWS has had on these families. This evidence enhances and highlights the reputation of HSWS as it shows its success in achieving a very high level of satisfaction with the families it supports. This also gives a watertight credibility to its service and provision for further funding and commissioning work.
