Recipient Org: Description | Carymoor Environmental Trust is an environmental education charity based near Castle Cary in Somerset. We inspire our visitors to live more sustainably, to feel connected to the natural world, and to understand how their choices impact the environment. Over 25 years Carymoor has regenerated 70 acres of capped landfill into a nature reserve. The amazing contrasts of our site, from a working Waste Transfer Station to our created meadows, ponds, and woodlands, provide a base for inspirational educational experiences and therapeutic volunteering opportunities. Our core activities include: Environmental education: Around 130 schools (around 4000 children) visit us each year to take part in activities, ranging from seeing the active waste site through to experiencing the wildlife on our nature reserve. Through exploring our unique site, we help children to understand how they can reduce their impact on the environment and experience the benefits nature can provide for their wellbeing. Adult and family learning courses: We provide courses for adult learners and families designed to connect individuals with nature. Learners learn traditional conservation and craft skills, such as willow weaving, hedgelaying, coppicing and scything. These skills boost physical and mental wellbeing and help learners to support and enhance the natural environment. These courses are funded by Somerset Council's Community Learning Programme. Volunteering: We provide volunteering opportunities that impact positively on the health and wellbeing of the individual and that help to protect wildlife on our site. In 2023-24 our volunteers gave 6225 hours, helping all aspects of our work. Their efforts enable us to do so much more than we would otherwise be able to achieve. In the last year, with funding from the National Lottery Reaching Communities fund, we have partnered with Magdalen Environmental Trust to run a project called 'Just Act Natural'. Between the two charities we are offering day and residential visits to families who have a child or young adult with learning disabilities or additional needs. This project has allowed us to purchase an off-road tramper to make our site more accessible to all of our visitors. The Just Act Natural events are aimed at allowing all children to enjoy the outdoors with their families and to provide a variety of inclusive and enjoyable activities in nature. The project has enabled our staff team to work in partnership with a charity partner to develop their skills and confidence in working with children with additional needs. As a 5 year project we are excited at being able to reach a new audience and to be providing an important way to support families who face a range of challenges. |
