| Recipient Org: Description | Cultivating Community is a unique community enterprise that operates from two sites, a beautiful walled garden in the heart of the pretty village of Mells and in the heart of Victoria Park in Frome. The Walled Garden at Mells site is a perennial plant nursery that grows and sells hardy cottage garden plants and herbs to support the therapeutic horticultural work that we do. The garden is open to the public from the 1st of April until the end of September. The Victoria Park site is an outdoor seasonal community cafe that provides refreshments with social and active connection in the Park. Both sites gardening and nature-based programmes to help improve the physical and mental wellbeing for those that may be experiencing loneliness and isolation. The people who benefit from our projects are very broad, from young adults through to the elderly, and those with mental, behavioural and physical challenges. Our reach is both rural and embedded within our community and surrounding villages and towns within a 15 mile radius. Our programmes are created in collaborations with local organisations, using lived experience to inform how programmes are developed and reflect the needs of participants. We focus on the quality of the interactions and the opportunities to connect with others in addition to providing purposeful work to ensure participants feel they are an important part of the life of the garden. People can sign up to session through self referral or through green or social proscribing from local medical and support workers. The 2022 season has been a season of growth in terms of our trading income and our programmatic offerings. Coming out of a few hard lockdown years we are really proud to be putting Cultivating Community on a secure footing having been able to diversify our trading profile with better retail offerings, exponentially building up stock levels of plants for sale (propagating from plug plants, seeds and cuttings from the garden), increasing in person sales by 20% this season, leveraging our social media marketing to grow our online presence and better communicate our offerings and increasing our programme hours with three new partnership (We Hear You, Somerset Skills and Learning, and Park Hill School) Victoria Park Café is a new venture for us in 2023, it will double our trading income and exponentially help us reach audiences that may have found our more rural site in Mells less accessible that they would like. The Park is fully disabled accessible and is used by families, young people and the elderly for a variety of reasons. The opportunity to grow our business would not have been possible without the support of a Somerset Community Foundation Enterprise grant and loan in 2023 that enabled us to take risks and be bold. We are currently developing a whole range of new programmes to run from Victoria Park in collaboration with other community organisations and we hope to open the Cafe in Spring 2023 |
